Project Status: Completed
Type of Project: Networking Award
Principal Investigator: Dr Justin Irvine, Macaulay Institute (Email)

Objectives

Development of a framework for collaborative land management to facilitate the sustainability of rural economies, using integrated deer management as a case study.

Specific objectives:
1. Bring together an interdisciplinary team of leading socio-economists and environmental scientists to identify social, economic and environmental factors and their interactions that underlie deer management and its role in rural economies.
2. Identify national and regional differences in social, economic and environmental conditions that are responsible for the contrasting approaches to deer management and highlight the implications these have for sustainable rural economies.
3. Select suitable case study areas in England, Wales and Scotland to represent regional variation in rural socio-economic and deer management systems.
4. Identify the principal stakeholder and interest groups that would actively participate in the main research project
5. Assemble a proposal to be submitted to RELU, in collaboration with the identified stakeholders, which would facilitate the development of collaborative frameworks for the sustainable management in rural areas.
